ASNT- PAUT

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) – Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is an advanced non-destructive examination technique that utilizes a set of ultrasonic testing (UT) probes made up of numerous small elements, each of which is pulsed individually with computer-calculated timing. In antenna theory, a phased array usually means an electronically scanned array, a computer-controlled array of antennas which creates a beam of radio waves that can be electronically steered to point in different directions without moving the antennas.

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is a focused inspection technique designed to incorporate beam technology to detect complex geometries & sizing defects.

Phased array is an advanced method of ultrasonic testing and can be used for a multitude of different inspection tasks. This technique is used to detect flaws that cannot be easily found with conventional non-destructive testing methods such as radiography and manual ultrasonic testing.

But phased-array radars work differently; they steer the main beam by manipulating the pattern emanating from an array of hundreds or thousands of radiating elements, nearly instantaneously moving the location of the overlapping waves instead of an actual dish.
